If you’ve been living in a cave for most of 2020, which let’s face it most of us have (thank you lockdown), then it seems only fitting to round out the year with the return of everyone’s favourite cave family, The Croods.
Picking up with Grug (Nicholas Cage), Eep (Emma Stone) and Guy (Ryan Reynolds) pretty much where we left off 7 years ago, things are about to get interesting as the ‘pack’ continue their search for tomorrow, only to discover someone else may have gotten there first. Enter The Bettermans! Voiced by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage and comedy heroine, Leslie Mann, this new age family are way ahead of their time and possibly a little big for their boots.
Old friends of Guy’s family, they quickly muscle in on him, convinced he is the perfect mate for their daughter Dawn and so ensues an emotional tug of war. Thus caught between the two families’ conflicting modes of evolution, the burgeoning romance between Eep and Guy comes to a crossroads as the pair face the reality of their much different upbringings.
Things heat up between The Croods and The Bettermans, but just as baskets are wielded and rules are broken, a third party enters the fray shifting the dynamic once again. Forced to work together in order to survive, revelations are reached all around and like a crude version of Wife Swap the two broods get a little insight into themselves and what life is like on the other side of the proverbial wall.
Hilariously funny, heartwarming and pumped full of action, what I love most about The Croods is their realism in dealing with life’s hurdles. Punctuated with modern-day references framed in a caveman aesthetic, these families are no different from their 21st century counterparts and as they discover, from one another.
A wonderfully feel-good and funny note to end this crazy year on, go put a smile on your family’s faces and laughs in their bellies when THE CROODS - A NEW AGE hits cinemas on Boxing Day!
