Wear my hair down I thought, it looks nice I thought. Yeah, it was nice until it ended up wound around my newborn’s toe cutting off her blood supply!!
So that happened. In the middle of Westfield, not 10 minutes after Noah sliced his wrist open on a Christmas tree.
Sitting by the soft play, surrounded by other mums, grandparents and kids, where I’m giving my injured kid a cupcake to relieve the shock of his recent trauma; I take a crying Raphaella out of the Ergo to feed her and what to do I find… FORT KNOT!!!
Cue epic drama. I’m panicking, she’s crying, Noah’s eating cupcake. I’m trying to pull the hair away which only makes it worse and now it’s bleeding!! One woman is phoning an ambulance, another woman rushes off to get the nearest thing to a medical person (the cashier from Priceline Pharmacy), another comes over brandishing the largest pair of scissors I’ve ever seen and they’re all telling me to calm down.
Now the security guards and centre management are back, and yes it’s me at the core of yet another drama! They escort me to the medical centre where an actual doctor takes a look at the tied up toe and declares it’s too tight and she hasn’t got the right equipment. So off to the hospital we go where a team are waiting for us. Using a magnifying glass as big as a watermelon, medical tweezers and a nurse to hold Raphy’s legs still, the doctor extracts what I learned is called a HAIR TOURNIQUET.
Thank the lord her teeny toe is still intact and I vow never to wear my hair loose ever again!
There’s a reason the #mumbun exists people!
