Sarah and Duck, Quack. Sarah and Duck, Quack. Sarah and Duck. Quack! The wide-eyed girl and her web-footed bestie have hopped on a plane all the way from the UK to bring their much-loved BBC cartoon series to the Sydney stage. Sarah and Duck’s Big Top Birthday kicked off its debut theatrical run this week at the Sydney Opera House, where it will play until 23 December.
From the moment you are seated in the Playhouse you will find yourself very much transported into the world of the beloved animated duo of Sarah and Duck. The voices of every cast member, from the narrator to Scarf Lady’s Bag and Duck himself have lent themselves to the stage adaptation, to add true authenticity to the beautifully crafted puppets acting on stage.
It’s Scarf Lady’s birthday and Sarah and Duck are throwing her a party. So what does such an event call for? Why, nothing less than a brand new stage show featuring all of your favourite characters from the series. The Ribbon Sisters, Umbrella, Jon and Flamingo, The Shallottes and even Moon are all on hand to help Sarah create a party to remember.
A circus theme is the order of the day and pooling her friends’ talents, Sarah has a trove of entertainment to surprise Scarf Lady with, if only the weather will oblige. In a series of comedic events we watch as Sarah and Duck, and their friends work together to pull off a celebration to beat all other celebrations. From a tight-rope walking Flamingo to stand-up comedy, ribbon-twirling and even Duck being fired out of a canon; there is so much in store for fans of this park-loving pair.
